Alexandra is situated at the junction of the Clutha and Manuherikia Rivers. A popular summer holiday destination, Alexandra is the hub of NZ’s stonefruit and merino wool industries.

In recent times the town has been known for the Central Otago Rail Trail, which stretches 150km from Clyde to Middlemarch, designed for walkers, mountain bikers and horse rides. There is everything from and Olympic size ice rink and aquatic centre to wineries, river cruises, golf, kayaking, mountain biking, trout fishing and more.

Interesting features include a hillside clock, the Old Man Rock, Shaky Bridge and Tucker Hill Lookout. History is preserved in Otago Goldfields Heritage sites and a museum.
