The return of frosty mornings and clear, crisp days signals the return of prized truffles to the Canberra region.

The Truffle Festival Canberra Region began on the weekend and will see more than 250 events held across the region until early August.

During the festival a variety of high quality restaurants, produce markets, providores, bakeries and accommodation providers will work collaboratively with truffle growers to showcase the fresh black Perigord truffle in all its glory.

This year’s festival has a strong focus on truffles from paddock to plate, with growers working with a variety of talented chefs and industry professionals to bring their tasty and aromatic truffles to the people.  Visitors can sample the local culinary gem at everything from gourmet degustation dinners and cooking classes and demonstrations to wine tastings and matchings, farmers markets, truffle hunts and more.

The team behind cultured butter company Pepe Saya know all about the quality of truffles found in the Canberra district. For the past four years Pepe Saya has been using Canberra region truffles in their popular Pepe Saya Australian Truffle Butter available across NSW, ACT and to Qantas first class passengers.

This year the partnership has strengthened with Pepe Saya sponsoring truffle hunts to offer the ultimate truffle experience at growers’ properties; visitors can meet the dogs and help find truffles while learning first hand from the grower about all things truffle.

Denzil Sturgis owner of Tarago Truffles will be conducting the Pepe Saya Truffle Hunts at his property.

“The hunts provide a fantastic learning opportunity for visitors to our region and solidify the paddock to plate connection,” Mr Sturgis said.

“Visitors can come and see how truffles are grown, meet our dogs, participate in a hunt and smell and taste the truffles. It truly is a unique winter experience.”

For someone who hasn’t experienced a truffle hunt before the team at Pepe Saya think it could be the perfect introduction to the delicacy.

“If they have had good truffles before they will immediately fall in love and put it on everything, if they haven’t had truffles before, well it’s a good introduction to the black diamond.”

Chefs from some of Canberra’s top restaurants, including Brendan Walsh from Pialligo Estate and Damian Brabender from Sage, will also be sharing their wisdom during the festival at Westfield cooking demonstrations. At Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets visitors can take part in cooking classes held at 3 Seeds, beer and wine tastings, free cooking demonstrations and kids activities. There will also be live music, fresh truffles and truffle products for sale as well as truffles on the menu at many of the markets’ cafes and delis.
